Community Link Up

Supporting people with learning disabilities and promoting friendships with the local community

Community Link Up's award winning computer training

Community Link Up run activities and clubs for people with learning disabilities including; nightclubs, buddy schemes, travel training, dance classes and media courses. They help prepare clients for employment.

Link Up received an Opportunities for Volunteering grant from Attend to help set up a keep fit programme for their clients. The local Gym has provided membership and personal trainers to Community Link Up service users. This project has lead to related projects being set up. The Travel Training scheme was introduced when it was realised how unused to travelling alone many of the Service Users were. To enable them to get to the Gym safely, Community Link Up had to first train the Service Users in road-crossing and travel by bus and underground. Service Users have been able to become Volunteers through the Travel Training, the more able Service Users have become Travel Buddies to the less able and this has given both ‘buddies” greater confidence and the opportunity to build friendships.

Christine has been regularly attending Fitz Health Club for over a year now and thoroughly enjoys her sessions there. She has lost approx 7 kilos, and is much healthier is also a much happier person. I do hope this sponsorship will continue to be provided for adulds like Christine. Once again thank you." - Carole Chetty

"Link Up gave me a cheque of £ 40 to become a member of Fitz gym. I'm looking forward to go to the gym to get fit and improve my health. I plan to go to the gym three times a week." - Debbie Macdonald
