Alston Cottage Hospital League of Friends

Fundraising while the hospital is under consultation

Alston Cottage Hospital League of Friends are a group of 22 volunteers who raise funds to enhance patient care at their local hospital. The friends have supported over 1000 people. The League of Friends was originally set up by the Matron of the hospital who had heard about Friends projects in other areas of Cumbria and thought that a local Friends group was essential.

The Primary Care Trust which the hospital comes under had been under consultation with regards to future provision for Community Care Services, this has given a lot of uncertainty to the local community and has proved to be a big challenge. During this time, the Friends worked closely with PALS to ensure that any comments were documented and dealt with.

The Friends raised in excess of £143,000 during this time, which enabled them to re-build and re-furbish the Chapel of Rest at the hospital.

Quotes

“Thank you for this bed, I don't want to ever get out, it's so comfortable!”

“We couldn't ever survive without the Friends.” — Hospital Manager.
