World Book Day
Attend was delighted to join the annual celebration of literacy in the 1st March 2007. This was a great opportunity to help your hospital, and we are encouraged all our member groups to get involved!

About World Book Day
It’s been shown that reading to hospital patients can have great effects for both the volunteer and the patient. “Being read to is a great way for patients to be involved in human interaction, learn and excite their imaginations. It can serve as a distraction method, and raises their quality of life. And it’s relaxing for the reader too!” says Melissa Rosenberg, Clinical Studies Coordinator at the Headache Institute in New York City.
All children across the UK were given a £1 token from Book Tokens Ltd to be used towards a range of specially commissioned World Book Day Books that cost only £1. We encouraged people to donate books to hospitals when they visit the book shop. Local booksellers made book collections and arrangements for them to be presented to their local hospital, hospice or health centre.
In the World Book Day school kit, sent out to all schools, we have included many fun ideas for volunteering opportunities for young people in the health and social care sector.
