Carers and Pensions

Caring for someone can have implications on your pension. In order to receive a full basic State Pension you must have made a certain amount of National Insurance contributions.

There are two parts to the State Pension: a flat-rate basic pension and a State Second Pension, which is an additional pension and is related to earnings.

National Insurance contributions

If you reach State Pension age on or after 6th April 2016 for both men and women you would have had to have made National Insurance contributions for 35 years to claim the full State Pension.
