The winners of the Best Friends Week party are The Friends of Selby War Memorial Hospital

Margaret Hewer of the Friends of Selby

The Major and Margaret Hewer

The Friends of Selby War Memorial Hospital organised a Tea Party in Selby Railway Sports and Social Club on the afternoon of 23rd October to celebrate Friends Week. The event was arranged to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Attend, of which the Friends of Selby War Memorial Hospital have been a member for 25 years. As well as all the Friends, other local charity members were invited along with local councillors, the Mayor of Selby and local Labour and Conservative MPs, John Grogan and Nigel Adams.

Selby Friends

The Tea Party included a meal, tombola, musical entertainment, dancing, bingo and the opportunity to enjoy the company of other organisations and friends. A total of 120 people attended and enjoyed themselves so much that they were asking if they could "do it every week". The party was not intended to be a fundraising event but a chance for everyone to get together and have good time. The total cost to the Friends was just £20.
What Margaret Hewer, Chair of the Friends, didn't know was that there was a dual celebration. As her birthday was so close to Friends Week, Margaret was presented with a birthday cake, card and flowers by the Mayor of Selby. All the Friends had donated money for the gifts and had all signed hand-made birthday card. Always thinking of others, Margaret has decided to send the wonderful cake to the troops serving in Afghanisan. Margaret got straight in touch with an Army Major who has arranged for free transportation for the cake, along with lots of other donations. All the Friends are sending cards, letters and small presents like sweets, magazines and peanuts.
