140 years service! - The League of Friends at the Hillingdon Hospital

Press release from The League of Friends at the Hillingdon Hospital...

Volunteers at the Hillingdon Hospital’s League of Friends Charity had 5 extra reasons to celebrate at an afternoon tea party held to mark Volunteer week 1st – 7th June.

Five ladies, whose ages we cannot reveal,  have clocked up a staggering total of 140 years service, to the patients and staff at the Hillingdon Hospital.

Shane DeGaris, recently appointed as Chief Executive of the Trust presented long service certificates to the volunteers and said he was humbled by the length of service the ladies had done.

The following long service awards were given:  PAT BAILLIE and BETTY DAVIES both completed 20 years, SUE COX and IRENE QUELCH - 25 years and GWEN DYER a staggering 50 years!  They have all worked at the League’s shops over the years and are still going!

Betty said that she enjoys volunteering at the hospital and Pat said that volunteering has given her a ‘purpose in life’.  Gwen started helping the League of Friends before the current hospital was built and used to push a trolley around the old wards bringing all the essentials to patients – chocolates, toiletries and stamps and stationery for letters home!  She has since done many other jobs and is still helping at the Baby Boutique.

The Hillingdon League of Friends was set up in 1955, to raise funds for additional hospital equipment, this can be anything from a new clock to an Ultrasound Scanner.  On an average year the League would expect to raise £ 30 – 40 thousand pounds.  This is generated from running two shops at the hospital.  A sandwich bar in Outpatients, open Mon – Fri 10am – 4pm and a Baby Boutique based in the Maternity building selling everything for the well dressed baby!

If you do have to visit Hillingdon Hospital please do pop in and see us, we’d love to see you.
