Church from Scratch
“We organise around Jesus' mission and community life. We've come to realise that a weekly Sunday service would not be our priority in following Jesus.”
Church From Scratch is a Baptist church community, based in Southend, whose organisational aim is to improve the standards of their local community. In recent years, Church From Scratch has expanded into surrounding areas and there is now a network of 10 active community groups. This includes community groups based in Leigh, Rochford, Eastwood and Benfleet.
The team at Church From Scratch consists of approximately 80 adults and young people who meet in small groups on a weekly basis to organise projects and fundraising events that will support the cause.
One of the biggest and most influential projects is SharedSpace. SharedSpace is a community centre and charity shop working to make a better Southend. All profits made from SharedSpace is directly used to enhance the community with no profit going back to Church From Scratch.
SharedSpace takes and sells donated goods, provides volunteer opportunities, offers the community a space to gather, and facilitates for a wide range of activities and groups. SharedSpace is in the process of developing other activities that would take place off the premises. They aim to work with young people under the age of 25 and those who have had a less fortunate life. Through volunteering, SharedSpace offers people a chance to learn new skills, gain self-confidence, meet new people, and get involved in their community.
SharedSpace welcomes new volunteers and donations to the charity shop. Although SharedSpace is part of Church From Scratch, volunteers do not have to be in Church From Scratch.
“I work two shifts a week. It’s boosted my confidence. I’m getting lots of experience.”
“I’ve made a lot of friends here.”
“It’s helped gain my confidence and I’ve met some great people.”
“It’s a place where you can relax, sit down, have a chat, meet your friends, and have a drink."
